What Happens After You Fill Out a We Buy Houses Form?

Updated October 27, 2026. This article is general information, not legal advice.

You’re on a website that says it buys houses for cash. There’s a form asking for your name, phone number and address, maybe a few details about the property. Your cursor is over the button.

Before you click, you probably want to know who actually gets this information, whether ten people are going to call you and whether you’re signing up for something.

The short answer. Asking for an offer doesn’t commit you to sell, to sign or even to talk to anyone. Read the small print next to the button, though, because some forms include consent to be contacted. What happens to your information afterward depends on the kind of site you’re on.

Where Your Information Can Go

On a “We Buy Houses” site, your form usually ends up in one of three places.

With one local buyer. The site belongs to a company that buys houses in your area. Their team reads your form and someone from that company contacts you. One form, one company.

With several buyers. Some sites connect sellers with more than one buyer. Your information is shared, and each buyer contacts you separately.

With a middleman. Some sites exist mainly to collect information from homeowners and pass it on to other companies. In marketing, a name, phone number and address from someone who may sell is called a “lead,” and leads have value.

Why Your Phone Might Ring More Than Once

If you’ve filled out a form and gotten calls from several numbers you don’t recognize, it’s often because the site you used wasn’t the company that buys the house. Your information went to more than one place, and each company calls on its own, without knowing the others are calling too.

How to Tell Who Gets Your Data Before You Submit

You don’t need to be a detective. The page itself usually tells you.

  • Look for a company name and a real location. Scroll to the bottom. A company that buys locally usually says who it is.
  • Find the privacy policy. It should exist. Read what it says about sharing your information.
  • Read the text next to the submit button. If it mentions agreeing to be contacted by “partners” or “affiliated companies,” your information may go to more than one place.

If a page tells you none of this, it doesn’t mean something is wrong. It means you don’t know where your information is going. For more on checking out a buyer, read our guide on how to tell if a we buy houses company is legit.

What to Ask on the First Call

If someone calls after you’ve submitted a form, these questions tell you quickly who you’re talking to:

  • “What company are you with?” You should get a name you can look up.
  • “Are you the one who would buy my house, or do you work with other buyers?” Either answer is fine, but you should know.
  • “How did you get my information?” They should be able to name the website.
  • “Does getting an offer commit me to anything?” The answer from any legitimate buyer should be no.

How to Stop Unwanted Calls

  • Reply STOP to a text message. That asks the sender to stop texting you.
  • Tell each caller to take you off their list. Say it plainly and write down the date.
  • Register your number at donotcall.gov. It’s free. It won’t stop every call, because companies you gave permission to call can still reach you, but it reduces the volume. The FTC explains how the registry works in its FAQ.
  • Block the number from your recent calls, and report unwanted calls at donotcall.gov.

You’re Allowed to Ask Before You Click

A form on a website is not a contract on its own. But your information has value, and it’s fine to know where it goes before you send it.

Rather talk to a real person than guess?

At Better Off Home Buyers, getting an offer costs nothing and there’s no obligation. You can read how we buy houses or tell us about the house using the form on this page, and we’ll answer plainly.
